Michael Taylor, MDMichael Taylor, MD received the 2024 In Training Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) for his presentation titled, “Association Between Nursing Workforce Turnover and Agency Use on Pediatric Intensive Care Outcomes.” His work was the highest scoring abstract by a trainee out of >1500 overall submissions to the SCCM Congress.

The study assessed the impact of nursing workforce turnover and agency staffing use on patient centered outcomes in pediatric intensive care units during the COVID-19 pandemic. He demonstrated an association between workforce metrics and an increased proportion of patients experiencing ICU complications during 2021-2022. His abstract also received a Star Research Award from the SCCM. Further work aims to identify relationships between staffing and patient outcomes to help administrators bolster their workforce during periods of increased turnover. Dr. Taylor is currently one of our T32 trainees and is being mentored by Drs. Christopher Horvat and Robert Clark.
