Caitlin McNamara, MD, Bailey Petersen, PhD, DPT, and Ashley Russell, PhD, were named Scientists at the Safar Center for their outstanding investigations as young faculty members in the center. Dr. McNamara, an Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine and a clinician-scientist in the pediatric ICU at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, is focused on improving outcomes and optimizing therapies for infants who suffer traumatic brain injury (TBI) from abusive head trauma. Dr. Petersen—an Assistant Professor in the Department of PM&R is using bioengineering to investigate the role of physical activity in neurobehavioral recovery in children with TBI and developing patient-centered interventions to improve the lives of children with neuromotor disorders. Dr. Russell, a Research Scientist in the Department of PM&R, is carrying out pre-clinical studies to develop novel therapies for TBI that target post-injury neuroinflammation.
