Caitlin McNamara, MD,Caitlin McNamara, MD, current T32 fellow, received a travel award from the National Neurotrauma Society to present an abstract at the society’s 41st annual Symposium in San Francisco. She presented her research on cerebral ischemia in infants and toddlers with traumatic brain injury (TBI). She found that ischemia was associated with abusive head trauma, seizures, and poor short- and long-term outcomes. Surprisingly, there was a significant number of patients who presented with mild TBI and were found to have ischemia, which implies there should be a low threshold for MRIs to identify ischemia in this population. Her findings also suggest that ischemia could represent a therapeutic target particularly in infants and young children with abusive head trauma to improve outcomes.
