The Chuck Noll Foundation for Brain Injury Research awarded one of its five inaugural grants to Safar Center Associate Director Dr. C. Edward Dixon, to support his three-year study, “Docosahexaenoic Acid and Presynaptic Mechanisms in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury” which will be carried out at the Safar Center in collaboration with Assistant Professor Dr. Shaun Carlson.
The study will focus on analyzing the effects of utilizing one of the brain’s fatty acids, docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), as a therapy for neuronal damage after repetitive mild traumatic brain injury. Dr. Dixon is a full professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery, the Neurotrauma Chair in Neurosurgery, Vice Chair of Research, and the Director of the Brain Trauma Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Chuck Noll Foundation for Brain Injury Research, named after famed NFL player and coach Chuck Noll, was created in 2016 via a grant from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
