University of Pittsburgh Medical Student Elizabeth Kenny received the 2020 O’Malley Award for 5 years of excellence in Basic Science Research for her Longitudinal Research Project in the Physician Scientist Training Program. She was an exceptional student who was recruited to work at the Safar Center as an undergraduate by Dr. Cameron Dezfulian. She then worked with Dr. Hulya Bayir in collaborative investigations at both the University of Pittsburgh Center for Free Radical and Antioxidant Health and the Safar Center during medical school. She published a remarkable 12 manuscripts with Dr. Bayir including a first author paper last year in Critical Care Medicine on the novel cell death pathway Ferroptosis in experimental traumatic brain injury.
