Hülya BayırHülya Bayır, MD, Professor of Critical Care Medicine, Environmental and Occupational Health and Pediatrics, Director of the Neuroscience Institute at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Associate Director of both the Safar Center and the Pittsburgh Center for Free Radical and Antioxidant Health, was just named one of the 2021 recipients of the prestigious Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award for her R01 renewal application titled “Oxidative Lipidomics in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.”

The Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award (R37) is a conditional seven-year research grant given to scientists selected by the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council. Dr. Kochanek, Director of the Safar Center stated that “This is a groundbreaking accomplishment for a physician-scientist in the field of pediatric critical care medicine and a rare accomplishment for an investigator studying traumatic brain injury. Dr. Bayır’s important work in collaboration with Dr. Valerian Kagan, at the Pittsburgh Center for Free Radical and Antioxidant Health, has provided seminal insight into the role of oxidative signaling in mediating the ferroptotic cell death pathway. That work has great promise for the development of new therapies to treat or prevent brain injury.”

Congratulations to Hülya for this amazing achievement.
