Michael Taylor, MD MPH (Safar Center T32 Fellow 2023-2025) received the 2026 SCCM Research Section Scholarship at the Society for Critical Care Medicine Congress for his abstract, titled “Developing an EHR-Embedded Digital Safety Net to Reduce Acute Care Critical Deterioration Events.” Under the mentorship of Dr. Christopher Horvat, and with the contributions of dozens of dedicated clinicians, nurses, and staff at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, their work focused on identifying and reducing critical deterioration events among pediatric acute care patients using a predictive analytics machine learning algorithm embedded within the electronic health record (EHR). The tool identifies patients at risk of deterioration from lab values, vital signs, codified nursing intuition, and other EHR data elements. Outcomes evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in all-cause deterioration events and rapid response rates at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh from 2018-2024.
