Ruchira M. Jha, MD, MSc, Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine, Neurology and Neurological Surgery has been awarded a UPP Foundation Grant. This is a $50,000 one-year grant from the University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP)/UPMC Academic Foundation.

Dr. Jha’s project is titled “From Benchtop to Bedside- Sur1 is a Novel Biomarker and Unique Therapeutic Target Against Cerebral Edema in Traumatic Brain Injury.” The funds from this grant will continue to support her translational work on a mechanism of cerebral edema in traumatic brain injury. Her work involves studying this pathway in relevant animal models, patients affected by this condition in the search for genetic contributions to this disease, and predictive/prognostic biomarkers that may identify patients more likely to respond to certain therapies targeting cerebral edema.

Dr. Jha has also been selected to receive the Allen Humphrey Excellence in Mentoring Award, which “is presented to a Deans Summer Research (DSRP) mentor who demonstrated exemplary care and commitment in all aspects of DSRP student mentoring.” Nominations for the award are based primarily on student selection.

Congratulations to Dr. Jha on these outstanding achievements.
