Dr. Hülya Bayır was recently awarded the University of Pittsburgh’s 2018 Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments as physician, researcher, and exemplary educator to her trainees and mentees. The award, which is in the senior scholar category, is given via recommendation and nomination by Dr. Bayır’s peers—and recognizes her numerous and significant contributions to the fields of Pediatric Neurocritical Care, Brian Injury, and Redox Medicine.

Dr. Bayır, originally from Konya-Ereğli, Türkiye, received her MD from Hacettepe University in Ankara. After completing her residency at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, she pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) of UPMC, eventually rising to the status of Associate Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the CHP, and endowed full Professor in the Departments of Critical Care Medicine and Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to her many career honors and awards, Dr. Bayır has also published more than 100 peer-reviewed published articles, several of which have been published in prestige journals such as Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Neuroscience and Cell.
