At the 2021 Congress of the SCCM, University of Pittsburgh MD, PhD student Ben Zusman received two prestigious awards for his research. For his abstract titled “CSF Sur1 is associated with ICP and outcome after pediatric TBI: an exploratory study in Cool-Kids,” he received the Bronze Medal award, as the third most highly rated abstract presented at the Congress. He also received a Star Research Achievement award for a second abstract titled “Sur1 Pathway Genetic Variability may impact MMP9 secretion, Ca2+ signaling, ICP, and outcome in TBI.” This is a remarkable accomplishment particularly for a medical student in that the Congress attracts hundreds of abstracts from investigators across all critical care medicine world-wide. Ben is being mentored by Dr. Ruchira Jha, who recently moved to join the faculty of the Barrow Research Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Ericka Fink, Associate Professor of Critical Care Medicine achieved recognition at the SCCM Congress for being named a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care (ACCM) Medicine. Fellowship in the SCCM ACCM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated significant contributions and have made an impact in the critical care profession at a regional, state, or national level.

Congratulations to both Ben and Ericka for these outstanding accomplishments!
