Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation (EPR) Trial Featured in the New Scientist

A new clinical trial that will be led by Safar Center Associate Director Dr. Samuel Tisherman was recently featured in an article on the New Scientist magazine website. The EPR trial will provide a chance to successfully resuscitate 10 victims of penetrating trauma at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital whose injuries would otherwise be fatal from exsanguination. Upon admission, the trial team of emergency physicians will rapidly cool the patients to a level of deep hypothermia via an infusion of iced saline solution, arresting cellular activity and reducing metabolic demands, buying the team time to perform life-saving damage control surgery.
