Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) For futuristic advanced resuscitation potentials, an emergency
(portable) cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) system was developed
and evaluated in the 1980s, by Dr. Safar, Dr. Klain, and Mr. Stezoski.
Dr. Tisherman evaluated CPB for cardiac arrest cases in the E.D.
In dog outcome models, after prolonged cardiac arrest, CPB (veno-arterial
pumping via oxygenator without opening the chest) was found superior
to standard CPR advanced life support, in terms of cardiac and cerebral
recovery (Safar, et al: Am J Emerg Med 8:55, 1990). Manufacturers
have not yet developed prototype devices for clinical trials in
the field.
