CURRENT TRAINEES | VIEW FORMER TRAINEES

The Safar Center welcomes two new fellows into our Training in Pediatric Neurointensive Care and Resuscitation Research T32 program.  They join Drs. Steven Shein and Katie Russell who are in their second year of training.  This T32 is in its 12th year of funding and was just competitively renewed.  We thank NICHD for supporting this vital program for our center.

Nikki FergusonNahmah Kim-Campbell, MD
completed her residency at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.. She is currently in the second year of her fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. As a T32 Fellow, Nahmah is working on a project titled, “Free Hemoglobin in extracorporeal therapy decreases nitric oxide bioavailibilty and leads to oxidative stress and decreased end organ perfusion.” under the mentorship of Drs. Hulya Bayir, Mark Gladwin, and Kate Felmet.

Nikki FergusonNikki Miller Ferguson, MD
completed her pediatric residency at the University of Virginia, where she became Pediatric Chief Resident in 2009. She is currently the Pediatric Critical Care Chief Fellow at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where she will complete her fellowship in 2013. As a T32 Fellow, Nikki has been studying the burden of intracranial hypertension and cerebral hypoperfusion in pediatric traumatic brain injury under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Bell.

Steven Shein, MD
completed his pediatric residency training at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio and is in his third year of PICU fellowship training at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.  He has been studying the effect of hemorrhagic shock on the cytokine and chemokine response to experimental traumatic brain injury using a new murine model.   As a T32 fellow he hopes to carry out both bench and bedside studies.  In the laboratory, related to his initial work, he plans to study the impact of fever on secondary brain injury after experimental traumatic brain injury—mapping the time window for detrimental effects.  In the PICU he plans to carry out a single center exploratory trial of mild hypothermia for seizure control of refractory status epilepticus in children.

Katie Russell, PhD
comes to our T32 as the first postdoctoral fellow from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  Dr. Russell has a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh.  She has experience as a postdoctoral fellow studying language deficits after traumatic brain injury including work on white matter injury, working memory, and neuroimaging.  She plans to expand her work into the pediatric traumatic brain injury domain, studying cognitive development and its relationship to rehabilitation of deficits while on the T32.  Her work will be carried out under the joint mentorship of Drs. Amy Wagner and Joseph Ricker.
